£3M Low Carbon Housing Scheme to be unveiled

Friday 5th June 2009
A unique low carbon housing development designed by local people for local people was completed in Redditch on Tuesday 9th June.

The development in Walton Close boasted 19 low carbon homes built by Accord Housing Association for Redditch Co-operative Homes in partnership with Redditch Borough Council and funded by the Housing Corporation.

Local residents were involved in every step of the flagship £3m development and will now manage it themselves as a co-operative.

On Thursday 4th June two similar schemes at Sillins Avenue and Farm Road were commended as finalists in a national competition run by the Homes and Communities Agency for the low carbon development of the year.

Carl Taylor, Manager of Redditch Co-operative Homes, said: "We are very proud of the low carbon homes in Walton Close and we are so happy that local people can now live in them.

"This unique development not only provide's high-quality, low cost housing for the people of Redditch but also helps to combat global warming by slashing CO2 emissions.

"Vitally, because the running costs of these homes are nearly 40 per cent lower than traditionally built homes, residents will also enjoy much lower fuel bills."

Work to the scheme, which is made up of 2 and 3 bedroom homes for rent, started in the autumn of last year.

The high-quality homes have been built with distinctive timber panels manufactured off-site by a Norwegian co-operative, Hedalm Anebyhus, from sustainable forests.

Compared to a traditionally built house constructed 4 years ago, the homes in Walton Close produce almost 50 per cent less carbon and cost almost 40 per cent less to run a year.

A pond habitat, to the South East of Walton Close, used by Great Crested Newts has also been remodelled in consultation with Natural England.

A new 10-year management plan for the habitat will ensure the well being of the newts and allow bats, birds and wildflowers to thrive.

The 19 homes are part of plans for more than 100 timber Eco Homes either already on site or planned for the Redditch area.
