You're hired! New gardening apprentice starts at Magna
|
| Monday 11th July 2011 |
A new career in horticulture beckons for Katy Attree, thanks to an apprenticeship with Magna West Somerset Housing Association.
Katy, 23, has just started work as an apprentice gardener, and she's loving the job.
"Before this I was doing care work," she said. "I enjoyed
the contact with people but knew it wasn't for me.
"I wanted to do a gardening or building-type of job, something hands-on, so when this came up I applied for it and got the apprenticeship.
"It suits me very well - I am learning as I am going along and I still have interaction with people, which is what I like."
Katy's apprenticeship with Magna's garden assistance and handyperson service started at the end of June and lasts for 18 months. During this time, she'll work for the service as well as studying for an NVQ level 2 in horticulture one day a week at Bridgwater College's Cannington Centre for land-based education.
The apprenticeship has been established in association with Magna's Tenants' Panel, which is funding the course from its community improvement budget. Katy is based at St Peter's House, Williton.
Katy, from Wellington, said: "I am so pleased to have got the job - Magna seems a very good organisation to work for and everyone has been very helpful and friendly."
Magna's garden assistance and handyperson service offers help at a reasonable cost to elderly and vulnerable people in the association's area who can't manage their gardens or simple repairs and DIY jobs in the home.
The garden assistance service covers general garden maintenance such as grass cutting, hedge clipping, shrub pruning, clearing overgrown paths and tidying flower beds.
The handyperson service covers replacing tap washers, putting up shelves, hanging pictures and curtains, changing light bulbs, fixing loose cupboard doors, and other straightforward jobs in the home, including some re-decoration.
To find out more about the service, telephone Magna's freephone number 0800 138 6107 and ask for the community services team. |
