Walsall residents urged to get gas safe this autumn

Wednesday 7th September 2011
Stickers that detect poisonous carbon monoxide gas will be handed out to residents in Walsall next week to raise awareness of gas safety.

To mark the first national Gas Safety Week (12-18 September), Caldmore Housing Association will visit Hatherton Street from10am-1pm and Buckle Close from 2pm-4pm in Caldmore next Wednesday (14) to hand out the free patches.

The safety stickers, which are placed next to gas appliances and heating systems, change colour if they detect carbon monoxide escaping into the home.

Carbon monoxide accidentally kills around 50 people in their homes every year in the UK and is known as the \'silent killer\' because you can\'t hear, see or smell it.

As well as handing out the free detectors, staff from Caldmore Housing Association will also be touring homes to talk to residents about the importance of having a regular gas service.

Jim Williams, Senior Gas Engineer at Caldmore Housing Association, said: \"Carbon monoxide is an extremely poisonous and dangerous gas which is why it is really important to put measures into place to detect it.

\"These stickers are a great way of doing that but it is also vitally important that people have a gas service each year, which we do free of charge for our residents.\"

Gas Safety Week is being run by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on gas appliances in the UK. All gas engineers must be on the Register.

Caldmore Housing Association, part of the Accord Group of housing associations, provides affordable housing for people in and around Walsall. For more information about gas servicing and gas safety, call Caldmore Housing Association on 0300 111 7000.
