Town & Country homes clinch exclusive Gold standard for design
|
| Tuesday 14th September 2010 |
Town & Country Housing Group's innovative 'Avante' development at Coxheath, near Maidstone, has been named as one of just 20 schemes in the country to achieve a Building for Life 'Gold' standard.
Town & Country was one of the key partners in the sixtyK Consortium, which includes builders Crest Nicholson and architects Sheppard Robson. The consortium transformed the former Linton Hospital site to provide a mixed community of 150 homes. Of these, 38 were for affordable rent and shared ownership from Town & Country, and a further 29 were part of the Government's First Time Buyer Initiative.
The Building for Life awards recognise builders and housing associations that demonstrate "a commitment to high design standards, good place making and sustainable development".
Town & Country's acting development director Colin Lissenden said: "This is fantastic news and highlights the commitment Town & Country has to providing well-designed homes that will keep residents' gas and electricity bills as low as possible."
Schemes are judged against 20 stringent criteria, including contribution to the environment and community, character, streets, parking, pedestrianisation, design and construction.
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) provided nearly £4m of investment. Akin Durowoju, Head of area at the HCA, said: "I congratulate the sixtyK consortium and all those involved in developing this scheme and achieving such a high standard. The HCA and the consortium have achieved their vision of stretching the design and quality standards at Avante and creating a great and affordable place for people to live and work in Maidstone."
The consortium's name highlights the fact that many of the properties were built at an above-ground construction cost of just £60,000 or less. |
