Tenants in Hot water

Saturday 30th January 2010
Bridgwater based landlord SHAL Housing has been installing solar panels for hot water at four of its houses and will complete the work this week.

Concerned about the provision of affordable warmth AND the need to reduce the country's carbon emissions SHAL is trialling the use of solar panels. These panels are expected to produce all the hot water needs for these four households on sunny days in the summer, and help to pre-heat water on crisp sunny winter days.

John Thomson, Chief Executive at SHAL said "At SHAL we have long been concerned with affordable warmth and we expect these panels to reduce the cost of heating water. However, as a responsible landlord we also intend to dramatically reduce our carbon emissions to match government policy". He went on to explain that the government intend that, at 2050, carbon dioxide emissions will be only 20% of 1990 levels.

SHAL will review performance with the occupiers at the end of the first year.

SHAL has had a significant programme of investment in its housing stock over the years, including insulation, energy efficient heating and new double glazed windows.
