Stamp out Boredom concludes with successful presentation ceremony
|
| Friday 26th August 2011 |
Elmbridge Housing Trust Resident Involvement Team, who ran their project 'Stamp out Boredom' for twelve 11-16 year olds in the borough of Elmbridge, today concluded the project with an awards ceremony. The event took place in the Youth Café, at the Cromwell Community Centre on the St. John's estate in Walton on Thames.
Each young person who successfully completed the three week summer youth project was presented with a certificate by Dominic Raab MP for Esher & Walton. The ceremony was also attended by The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of Elmbridge, Councillor John Sheldon and the Mayoress, Councillor Mary Sheldon.
The project is task and reward based, so that the young people have to complete all their tasks through the week, and can then attend the 'reward' part at the end of the week. Throughout the three weeks, the project gave the young people a chance to take part in a variety of events, from creating their own radio show to touring the BBC studios, Chelsea Football Club to visiting the Houses of Parliament.
The Resident Involvement team at Elmbridge Housing Trust have carefully created a timetable of activities and rewards following feedback from last years participants, which are varied, positive, relevant and most of all fun. All of the activities that took place aimed to promote and strengthen skills such as team building and empowerment for the young people. It also gave them an opportunity to experience and learn new things. There was an underlying theme to the whole project and the tasks, of team work and community.
Josh Rutter aged 13 said; 'I really enjoyed the project this year. Doing the project last year inspired me to set up the Youth Café on the St. Johns estate. This year I learnt about healthy living and marketing which will help when we are ready to open the café.'
Dominic Raab MP for Esher & Walton said; 'This is a great project, which is clearly popular with children and parents. It's important to provide youngsters with positive activities to engage in - Stamp out Boredom is a real local success story.'
The three week project was supported by Surrey Police, Surrey Youth Service, Chelsea FC Football in the Community Team and Elmbridge Community Safety Partnership. It was also supported by Giraffe Restaurants and Brooklands FM. |
