Song, Dance, Poetry and Rap as pupils re-design Walsall
|
| Thursday 25th March 2010 |
Schoolchildren from across the borough used song, dance, poetry, drama and even rap as they presented their ideas for regenerating Walsall to a panel of experts.
Year 8 and 9 pupils from six schools battled it out at the Walsall Education Business Partnership Regeneration Challenge to devise a blueprint to transform the town.

The children used a unique hands-on tool called Planning for Real to actually create physical models of how parts of the borough will look, focusing on how to reduce crime, provide youth facilities and make the town greener.
Aldridge School narrowly scooped the top spot using an adapted rendition of Queen’s classic ‘We Will Rock you’ to explain how they would redevelop Walsall. Joseph Leckie and St Thomas Moore were pipped to the post and Highly Commended. Pupils from Streetly, Blue Coat and Brownhills also wowed the judges with their work.
The event was judged by regeneration experts from Accord Housing – which delivers Planning for Real consultation across the country – and Ruth Vyse from the Local History Centre. The challenge was held at Forest Community Arts Centre yesterday (Thursday).
Lorenzo Cozco, of Walsall Education Business Partnership, said: “The day was a huge success and the children thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the models. I want to thank all of the schools for playing their part.”
Margaret Wilkinson, who co-ordinates Planning for Real from Accord’s Darlaston-based Neighbourhood Resource Centre for Central England, said: “The children were fantastic and we had an impossible task in picking a winner. Each and every team did brilliantly in coming up with imaginative plans and entertaining presentations.” |
