Sanctuary scheme in running for digital accolade
|
| Monday 24th January 2011 |
A Sanctuary Housing sheltered scheme in Doncaster is leading the way in digital training for residents after being nominated for a National Housing for Older People Award.
Gresley Road has been shortlisted in the Digital Inclusion category of the awards which recognise and celebrate the achievements of housing in later life.
Nominated by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education), Gresley Road has been put forward for the accolade after signing up to the national Get Digital Programme - a £2.8 million Government funded project that aims to provide digital training to older people in England who live in sheltered accommodation.
Sanctuary successfully secured funding to the tune of £10,000 from the project and residents from Gresley Road have been reaping the rewards after beginning classes in computer training and surfing the web last year.
The training, which runs until March 2011, has proved an instant success and the achievements have resulted in the scheme being shortlisted for the award.
Gresley Road will now receive gold, silver or bronze level award in the Digital Inclusion category, to be announced at a prestigious ceremony on Thursday 3rd February at Ascot Racecourse.
John Hanson, Sanctuary's regional director, commented: "To be shortlisted for this award is testament to the services we provide to residents and the success of the classes being run at Gresley Road. The practical sessions are a very positive way of bringing residents together while supporting their learning to help them continue to enjoy fulfilled lives."
As well as helping residents at Gresley Road, Sanctuary is using the funding to run similar classes at two sheltered schemes in Hull which began this month. |
