Rosie future for apprentices

Tuesday 31st August 2010

A group of Doncaster apprentices have been chatting to Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton about their apprenticeships and how vital they are in teaching them the skills they need for their trade.

Rosie visited Silverwood House, Balby, to see three apprentices – Sarah Steele and Liam Middleton, both electricians, and Kris Waterhouse, a plasterer - who work for St Leger Homes of Doncaster and who have recently carried out work in the high rise flats.

She also called in to see tenant Flo O’Hara to hear how she loves living in the flats.

Rosie said: “Apprenticeships provide a great way to get on and get a good, well paid job, for people who do best in on the job training. I am proud that the creation of a National Apprenticeship Service under the previous Government has helped drive up the number and quality of apprenticeships and it has been a pleasure to meet not only some of the people benefiting from the scheme but also tenants who are benefiting from their work.”

Susan Jordan, chief executive of St Leger Homes of Doncaster, said: “We have a great team of apprentices and the three who met Rosie really enjoyed chatting with her telling her about their jobs and their training. Our apprentices work really hard to learn their trades and it has been really good for them to share their experiences with Rosie.”

St Leger Homes runs its own apprenticeship scheme and currently has 31 apprentices. The company also works with a range of partners to offer students work experience.
