Ribbon cutting marks new homes
|
| Thursday 18th February 2010 |
Severnside Housing invited local residents, partners and stakeholders to join them as the ribbon was cut to mark the completion of work on 20 new affordable homes in Shrewsbury.
Cllr. Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council, cut the ribbon at the £1.8 million Sandhurst Meadows development, off Montgomery Road in Sundorne, behind the Territorial Army centre on Thursday 4 February.
Around 40 people came along to celebrate the completion of the work and have a look around the new homes, including representatives from the Homes and Communities Agency and Shropshire Council. They were joined by residents of the new rental homes, and marked the event with a celebratory cake.
Construction firm J. Harper & Sons began work on the site in January last year and completed the properties in December. Sixteen of the three-bedroom homes have been let for general rent, with the remaining four three-bedroom, three-storey homes available on a shared ownership basis, from £67,500 for a 50 per cent share, with rent payable on the remaining share.
Prior to work starting on site, extensive steps were taken to count, collect and relocate number of Great Crested Newts to a dedicated, protected habitat nearby.
Work on the £1.8 million project was funded by Severnside Housing and through the Government's Affordable Housing Grant programme.
All of the homes are of a modern timber frame construction and incorporate a number of energy efficient measures including high levels of insulation, energy efficient 'A-rated' condensing gas boilers, supplemental solar panels for hot water and gas filled double glazed doors and windows. These features aim to reduce energy consumption, leading to savings of around £535 per household per year
# . In recognition of this, the homes have received a number of accreditations including Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design. They are also suitable for full wheelchair access.
The development also includes a new children's play area, with swings, slides, a climbing frame and secure fencing, providing a safe play area for families with young children.
Sarah Boden, Chief Executive at Severnside Housing, said: "We are very delighted to officially open these 20 much needed attractive and affordable homes in Shrewsbury. They've been built to address a local need for affordable housing, and include a number of green, energy efficient measures will help to drastically reduce running costs. |
