Public-private partnership encourages Bright Sparks in Salford

| Wednesday 29th June 2011 |
A public-private partnership in Salford will see the refurbishment of a grade two listed building to create eight live-work units in a £1.7 million scheme that will retain business and investment in the local community.
Councillor Connor from Salford City Council said: "Spark Studio is a great example of the public and private sector working together to revive a landmark building and establish a live-work centre offering accommodation and workspace for budding entrepreneurs and the local community."
There are four main project partners working together to deliver a complete service to the new residents while leading on their core area of service.
Contour Homes Limited (a subsidiary of Symphony Housing Group) will be managing the 'live' element of the scheme. "As a housing association we are able to offer 'first step affordable accommodation to tenants alongside support and advice which complements the offer of our partner organisations," said Chris Whitfield.
Developer Godliman-Watson Homes has already transformed neighbouring buildings and is looking forward to revitalising this particular listed building. "We are pleased to be able to provide a sustainable future for this building," said Iain Watson from Godliman-Watson Homes.
It is envisaged that creative cottage industries would particularly suit Spark Studio and the University of Salford which has 20,000 students will be helping to market the scheme to its graduate and alumni community.
Claire MacLean, Head of Employability from the University of Salford said: "This is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to re-invest their learning and inspire others to set up their own business."
It is envisaged the first tenants at Spark Studio will be in situ later this year
