Primary school students unveil colourful artwork at ceremony at Weavers Court in Rochester, Kent

Monday 6th June 2011
Young residents from St Margaret's CEVC Primary School at Troy Town in Rochester unveiled a series of 26 drawings that are now permanently displayed at Weavers Court in King Street. The housing scheme has recently undergone some redecorating and the students at St Margaret's wanted to do their part by making a contribution to brighten up the scheme. The students, aged four to eleven, created colourful pictures of rainbows, families and the local community that have been hung in the communal area of the housing development.

The official unveiling took place on Friday 27 May and was made by the students who created the artwork, as well as Ward Councillor for Rochester East, Nick Bowler, Headteacher, Jennifer Faik, Weaver Court residents and staff from Orbit South.

Bradley Ketts, age eight, was one of the young people who created one of the paintings that was unveiled at the event and who lives at Weavers Court, says; "The paintings brighten up our home and all the pupils took part in painting them."

"We are so pleased that local young people have taken an interest in creating artwork for the residents at Weavers Court to enjoy," says Rachel Lockyer, Neighbourhood Officer for Orbit South. "Now that the redecorating has been completed, the artwork really brings the communal area to life and it will be something both residents and visitors will be able to enjoy for many years to come."

Weavers Court is a housing scheme that opened in July 2007 and consists of 33 homes for affordable rent, a combination of one and two bedroom apartments. Weavers Court needed redecorating and with the input of residents and Street Block Voice resident, Rhonda Ketts, it was agreed that each floor would be painted a different colour to give the scheme individuality and to brighten it up for the people who live there. Councillor Nick Bowler donated the frames for the pictures.
