Papworth Trust scoops three awards

Wednesday 17th June 2009
Leading disability charity, Papworth Trust, has won three Community Care awards for its achievements in social care. The Trust has been recognised in three categories: User Involvement, Community Care Champion and Partnership Working.

Foundations for Living, which won the User Involvement category, supports disabled people to live independently and was developed to address the social isolation some residents were facing by living in residential care in rural Cambridgeshire.

By working in partnership with Hill Residential, a commercial developer, Papworth Trust was able to create a scheme in the heart of Huntingdon which fully integrates affordable accessible homes with private flats. Residents helped to choose a suitable location and were supported to express their views by staff and independent advocates, with one tenant sitting on the project management team.

Lucy Bolden, community services manager at Papworth Trust, has been recognised as a Community Care Champion for her commitment to Papworth Trust. Lucy joined Papworth Trust eight years ago and in that time has truly embodied the values of the organisation. She has led the development of the Disability Resource Centre in West Suffolk, project managed the development of the Papworth Trust Centre, Huntingdon (part of Foundations for Living), and helped secure a number of major care and support contracts.

In scooping the Partnership Working award, The Opportunities Trust is the first organisation in the UK to be developed to look specifically at the range and quality of support being provided to adults with disabilities. The unique county-wide partnership comprises social care representatives from all sectors, Cambridgeshire County Council and charities including Papworth Trust and Red2Green, as well as private and independent care providers.

Adrian Bagg, Chief Executive of Papworth Trust said: "We pride ourselves on coming up with pioneering ways of doing things and then make them happen. These awards show what can be done, not just in theory, but based on real-life. I am really proud of all the staff that have worked so hard to make such a positive impact on the lives of disabled people."
