New council housing to be built in Ward Green
|
| Sunday 13th September 2009 |
Funding has been secured to build new council houses in Barnsley - the first for 30 years.
Barnsley Council is working in partnership with Berneslai Homes to build 16 two-bedroom apartments for rent at Vernon Crescent in Ward Green.
Barnsley was in competition with local authorities nationwide to bid for funding under the government’s Local Authority Challenge Fund Initiative.
The challenge fund initiative is designed to stimulate the construction industry and directly involve local authorities in the provision of new social housing.
Barnsley was one of only six councils in the Yorkshire and Humberside region to receive a share of the £27 million funding.
Helen Jaggar, Chief Executive of Berneslai Homes, said: “This new development will provide more choice for our customers on our waiting lists, will be great for the local community and will contribute to wider regeneration initiatives we are leading on in the Worsbrough area.”
Cllr Steve Houghton, Barnsley Council Leader, said: “This will be the first of what we hope will be a range of council house building projects to support Barnsley people and their families.”
In addition to the new homes, the development at Ward Green, which will cost £1.69 million in total, will offer employment opportunities for local people and contribute to improvements to surrounding streets. Construction work will start early next year.
The council and Berneslai Homes are already preparing bids for round two of the Challenge Fund in late October. |
