New £3.5M Caldmore Housing Scheme opens

Tuesday 15th December 2009
A new 22-home scheme in Walsall has been completed by Caldmore Area Housing Association in a £3.5 million project.

The 3.5m development in Alma Street, Darlaston, has been built to Level 3 of the Government Code for Sustainable Homes. This means the houses are designed to be energy efficient to reduce fuel bills and carbon emissions.

Alma Street, which received £634,000 Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) investment, is the first new scheme developed by Caldmore for 6 years and was delivered in partnership with the Accord Group, which Caldmore joined in September. The homes are for rent.

On Wednesday (16 December) Walsall Deputy Council Leader Councillor Adrian Andrew will officially open the scheme by unveiling a bench, before having a look around one of the new homes.

You are invited to send a Photographer at 12.30.

The event will also provide an opportunity for the Accord Group to formally welcome Caldmore Housing Association, which joined as its seventh member.

Mike Hew, Caldmore Chief Executive, said: “There is a fantastic development and we are delighted to be building the new homes that local people need.

“Being part of the wider Accord Group means we can access both the funding and in-house expertise to build more homes in the future, in partnership with people in the local community.”

Accord Group Chief Executive Dr Chris Handy OBE said: “Caldmore has a proud history in the town and we are looking forward to helping it grow and thrive as an independent community-based organisation in the future.”

Councillor Andrew said: “This is excellent news for Darlaston. It is brilliant partnership working and builds on what we are trying to achieve in the town.

“This is an impressive development and exactly the kind of project the council is committed to supporting. The Accord Group has a track record of developing excellent housing and this is no exception.”

Paul Spooner, the Regional Director of the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “The social housing sector has a major role to play in continuing to build new homes, despite the current climate, and our investment into the Caldmore scheme has enabled the Accord Group to do just that. We are delighted to have been involved in this project and look forward to seeing the impact our investment has had on the community in Darlaston.”
