Moat's statement on green paper, Local decisions

Monday 22nd November 2010
Moat's statement on green paper, Local decisions: a fairer future for social housing.

We welcome today's green paper, Local decisions: a fairer future for social housing, and will be responding in detail over the next few weeks.

Commenting on the announcement, Brian Johnson, Chief Executive at Moat said; "We welcome the opportunity for a discussion about the future of social housing, and how providers can meet the challenge ahead.

"However, we do not believe that moving people on when their circumstances improve is the way to tackle the pressure on social housing. We are calling on Government to rethink its plans and reform rents so that people who can pay more do, but that no one is asked to leave their home just because their circumstances have improved. Put simply, we believe that subsidy should follow people rather than bricks and mortar.

"Similarly, the Government's plans to solve the housing crisis by encouraging people into home ownership will come to nothing without a clear message to the financial regulator that mortgage availability must improve. We are experiencing a loan famine which threatens to starve the housing market and do untold damage to the wider economy.

"We look forward to engaging with the Government over the coming weeks and months to discuss the issues raised today."
