Mayor to meet residents at new Older People's Complex
|
| Tuesday 23rd March 2010 |
The Mayor of Wolverhampton will launch a new £7M sheltered housing scheme this week that is transforming the lives of older people in the City.
Councillor Surjan Singh Duhra will officially open Accord Housing Association’s new flagship extra care scheme Showell Court in Low Hill on Thursday (25th).
The Mayor will tour the Othello Road scheme before meeting its residents who will be helping pupils from Whitgreave Junior School create art work to be displayed at the scheme.
The scheme actively encourages residents to take part in a range of activities from craft sessions to quizzes to boost their health and well-being – the scheme even has its own Activities Co-ordinator.
You are invited to send a photographer to the opening of Showell Court, Othello Road, Low Hill, WV10 9NE at 12.45.
Mark Pearce, Assistant Director of Care and Support for Accord, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Mayor Councillor Duhra to Showell Court – a scheme that is really changing the lives of older people in this area.
“At Showell Court residents have the independence that having their very own apartment brings as well as the knowledge that help - and a friendly face - is just a stones throw away if needed.”
Resident Hilda Whitehouse, who had been in hospital and respite centres for nine months before moving to Showell Court, said: “When we get together to have meetings or activities we all get along fine in each others company. I know if I need anything that I only need to call and life is not so lonely now.”
Showell Court, built on the site of a former steelworks, is made up of 64 affordable one and two bedroom apartments for people aged over 55 to rent.
The scheme, which received more than £3M worth of funding from the Homes & Communities Agency, features a 50-seat café style restaurant which is open to the local community too. It also has an IT suite, a spacious lounge, a guest suite that visiting families can use and a number of meetings rooms that can be used by local community groups.
Councillor Les Pugh, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, said: “Very sheltered housing schemes like Showell Court give residents the ability to live their life with confidence and peace of mind knowing that help is on hand if they need it, whilst at the same time they have the privacy of their own front door to their own apartment.”
Mayor Councillor Surjan Singh Duhra added: “Showell Court is a welcome addition to the well-being of the people of Wolverhampton and I am delighted it is proving so popular with its new residents.”
Showell Court, which has been built by Wates Living Space, has been designed to include green features such as Structural Insulated Panel technology which reduces energy consumption. Each apartment also has under-floor heating.
Those interested in living at Showell Court can call the Care & Support Team at Accord Housing Association on 0300 111 7000 or email customerfirst@accordgroup.org.uk |
