MP Praises rural housing development
|
| Thursday 8th October 2009 |
Home, in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency, South Lakeland District Council and The Lake District National Park Authority, recently completed the £1 million scheme, called Tyson’s Fold, of five affordable homes to rent for local people.
The homes have been built in a traditional Lakeland style, with slate roofs, timber sliding sash windows to the front, exposed spar feet and functioning chimneys. They have been designed and built to an excellent standard and are the first to be completed by Home in the North West to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 3.
The houses are built using materials that are from sustainable sources and have a low impact on the environment. They have very high levels of insulation in the walls, floor and roof space. Wood burning stoves have been fitted and a rainwater harvesting system to reuse it to flush toilets and use in washing machines.
Tim Farron, M.P. said: “I was delighted to be asked to open this new development in Hawkshead.
“All too often at my surgeries I see people who are living in inappropriate housing, or who are having to move out of the area because of the high house prices and low average wages in the South Lakes. That’s why I am so welcoming of this development, and why I am such a supporter of more affordable housing developments like this in locations backed by the local community.
“I wish the residents who have moved into Tyson’s Fold all the best in their new homes, and hope they really enjoy living there.”
Andrea Thorn, Acting Managing Director for Home, said: “In addition to the shortage of homes, local house prices stand at an average of £345,000 with private rentals at a staggering £300-plus per week.
“Home last built in Hawkshead in 1995 when eight much-needed rented properties for local people were completed at Springwood and the last time any of them became available to relet was five years ago. In an area where wages are traditionally low these five affordable rented homes make a real difference for local families.” |
