Local employment pledge making its mark

Monday 13th August 2012
Coast & Country’s commitment to employing local workers on its £45m Mill Meadows housing scheme in Filey is well ahead of target with 33 already recruited.

The workers, who include bricklayers, joiners, scaffolders, groundworks operatives, and roofers, all come from within a radius of about ten miles of the Muston Road site. This includes Filey itself, Humanby, Scarborough, and Bridlington.

At this stage it was expected that between 20 and 25 local workers would have been appointed.

Tracy Blood, from Bridlington, who has been jobless for more than a year, is due to start work at Mill Meadows next month (Sept). She will be responsible for keeping the portable cabins and meeting rooms clean.

The 42-year-old mother-of-one was previously a care assistant. She said: “I have hated being unemployed and have been looking for a job for about 14 months.

“Being given this opportunity at Mill Meadows is a dream come true. I can’t wait to start work there.”

Andy Roberts, from Scarborough, will join the team as site foreman later this month, while two apprentices – a joiner and electrician – who live in Filey and Bridlington, also will start work at Mill Meadows in September, taking the number of local jobs created there to 37.

Iain Sim, Coast & Country’s Chief Executive, said: “Contributing to the local community and its economic wellbeing are an integral part of our Mill Meadows development.

“We are determined to help build brighter futures for local people, not only by providing quality much-needed affordable housing, but by offering work and training to local people.

“We are working in partnership with contractors and the local council to achieve these aims, which have to be balanced against what skills sets and trades people are available in the local area.

“As the site develops further, we will be looking to recruit more local workers.”

In May, Coast & Country held a Jobs and Training Fair at The Evron Centre, Filey, where staff outlined to local people what kind of the job opportunities would be available.

Contractors and local partners also attended to help showcase the job and training potential that will be created at the development.

Mill Meadows will provide 300 new homes incorporating a mixture of two, three, four and five bedroom homes and bungalows.

The affordable housing element will comprise 60 homes for rent and 60 for shared ownership, with the remaining 180 homes being available for open market sale.
