Howard Cottage HA new office named Pioneer House!

Thursday 26th February 2009
Howard Cottage Housing Association has named their new office Pioneer House in recognition of the Letchworth pioneers who set up the first garden city. The housing association ran a competition for staff and residents to name the office and unanimously decided on the winning name. Howard Cottage is due to move into their new office, on Norton Way South, Letchworth in the spring and wanted to register the name before they moved.

Resident Sue Clarke from Letchworth chose the name and entered the competition. Sue explains why she chose the name 'I chose Pioneer House because Letchworth is a pioneering garden city and Howard Cottage is a pioneering charitable housing association.' Sue received a cheque for £100 and will be involved in the opening of the office in the spring. The creation of Letchworth Garden City involved a number of different pioneers including Ebenezer Howard who had the original vision for garden cities, George Bernard Shaw who was one of the early investors in Howard Cottage, and the architects Parker and Unwin who designed some of the early Howard Cottage houses.
