Housing association receives bronze for staff investment

Thursday 5th January 2012
Railway Housing Association is celebrating after achieving bronze status from the Investors in People standards.

The Association had initially only applied for the standard accreditation but the assessor was so impressed with the feedback she received from staff she recommended the organisation was upgraded to bronze.

The standard looks at how Darlington-based Railway Housing Association, which employs 39 in the North East, Yorkshire and Herefordshire, invests in its staff to achieve the aims of the business plan.

Achieving bronze shows the Association has focused on encouraging a good work/life balance, provides opportunities for staff training and development, and respects and promotes diversity and equality.

In the report the assessor said: "Learning is part of the culture of the organisation and is an everyday part of operations, and learning activity is aligned to the business objectives and prioritised as a result.

"There is a strong family feel to the organisation and individuals have been supported to help ensure they have a good balance between work and private life, with a lot of good practice emerging which will help the organisation seek achievement of the IIP silver standard in the three years to come."

As part of the recommendations and areas for development, the assessor added: "There are strong values of the organisation which shine through from the very moment you step through the doors and these need to be defined and utilised to help in the promotion and future business development of the organisation.

"The Association should consider ways in which the customer's experience can be captured and that the achievements of the Association can be used to attract further opportunities and clients to take up the services."

Anne Rowlands, Chief Executive of Railway Housing Association: "Considering we applied for the standard award we were absolutely delighted to receive the bronze award and it demonstrates our commitment to ensuring staff enjoy their work and are fully supported in their training and development."
