Haringey residents consulted on new bathroom design
Sunday 13th September 2009
Homes for Haringey has started consulting with residents in Noel Park on a proposal to upgrade 129 bathrooms in homes in Farrant, Gladstone, Moselle and Morley Avenues.

The project will see outdated bathroom ‘pods’ removed from the back of terraced properties and replaced with brand new structures containing modern bathroom suites.

Residents in homes due for refurbishment have been sent a letter outlining the process and inviting them to a consultation meeting in September.

The prefabricated pods were added to the back of the two-storey houses and flats over 20 years ago as a temporary measure and are nearing the end of their economic life. They also contain asbestos sheeting which, although safe while undisturbed, is best removed and disposed of safely by certified professionals.

All the homes and gardens involved will be surveyed to find out the condition of the pods, drains and other issues that may affect the project. The surveys will also identify any Decent Homes work needed.

Ola Akinfe, Executive Director of Asset Management, said: Once the surveys are completed, initial plans will be drawn up. We'll be asking residents to choose one design option from a selection which can be carried out within the budget available. The majority decision will be selected. We are also looking for resident representatives to be involved in this project.”

Cllr John Bevan, Cabinet Member for Housing Services said: Improving the condition of council housing stock in the borough and making sure it is fit for purpose for many years to come is of great importance to us. The pods are already past their best and if we don’t do something now, repairs and maintenance costs will steadily increase. Carrying out the work will ensure that residents have a fully integrated bathroom as part of their property.”

Any work is likely to start in the spring of 2010 and the project is expected to last up to three years.

Homes for Haringey is also asking for two council tenants and two leaseholders from properties with pods to represent local residents on the project team.
