Hanover's Insight into pioneering 20 Years of Extra Care at Olive House

A new report commissioned by Hanover, looking at the development of and challenges facing Extra Care Housing will be launched at the official opening of Olive House, Hanover's latest pioneering retirement housing development.
Located in London's stunning Imperial Wharf development, Olive House, will officially be opened by Baroness Andrews, the former Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Department for Communities and Local Government on the 21st July 2009.
Hanover pioneered the development of Extra Care Housing and as a specialist provider of retirement housing used its knowledge and experience to develop a model of housing that fully integrates support, care, catering and services for older people within one location. Extra Care housing developed by Hanover has been adopted by the Housing Corporation (now the Homes and Communities Agency) and the Department of Health as their preferred development option.
Extra Care is an ideal solution for older people who seek the independence afforded by their own home with the assurance of care and support services readily available on-site. In its relatively short existence, Extra Care housing as a model has been described in a number of different ways including; Category 2½, Very Sheltered Housing, Housing With Care, Assisted Living, and Extra Care.
Since starting its first Extra Care housing development, Dulverton Court, in 1989 Hanover has been at the forefront of innovative design, service development and partnership working.
To celebrate this milestone Hanover commissioned Nigel King (of the Housing and Support Partnership) to undertake a review of the evolution of Extra Care housing and how Hanover has responded over the last twenty years.
To complement "Lessons Learned" Hanover will also launch - 'The Future for Extra Care Housing and A Reinvention of Retirement Housing'. This paper seeks to draw conclusions from the past and considers options for the future.
Twenty years on from Hanover's first Extra Care Housing project two key questions have been explored;
Has Extra Care proved to be a good model for providing housing for older people by combining it with access to care and support?
Although the concept of Extra Care has flourished since it was first developed at the end of the 1980's is it always necessarily going to be the best approach for the future? |
