Group blossoms with award nomination
|
| Tuesday 27th September 2011 |
A Community group has been shortlisted for a prestigious regional award just over a year after it formed.
Tudor Fields Residents' Group was shortlisted to six finalists for the Best Community Project category - from 60 entrants - at the Anglia In Bloom Awards held on Tuesday, September 13.
The Group has worked in conjunction with Godmanchester In Bloom, Muir Group Housing Association and Hi-Spec Services to brighten up the neighbourhood around Tudor Road, Godmanchester, and encourage community pride through gardening activities.
"We are so proud to have reached the shortlist for the awards, and it came as a complete surprise because we didn't nominate ourselves, Godmanchester In Bloom put us forward for it," said Jim Worlding, a member of the residents' group.
"It has been great to see the community pulling together, taking the time to make a difference and taking pride in the neighbourhood.
"When all the flowers we have planted come into bloom it looks beautiful and it feels great to know you have played a part in that."
Tudor Fields Residents' Group was formed in the summer of 2010 with
help from Muir Group Housing Association, which manages around 200 properties in the area, to tackle issues such as fly-tipping and to improve the landscaping of the area.
Since then they have held community days where they planted 2,000 daffodil bulbs around the neighbourhood, helped children to create hanging baskets and colourful plant pots and litter picked around the estate.
Muir Group Housing Association has funded all those events through their charity Friends Of Muir Group and staff helped out on the day as well.
Community Engagement Officer Jan Kaneen and Community Housing Officer Trudie Budnik were recently awarded certificates from Godmanchester In Bloom in recognition of the work they have done in the community.
"It has been wonderful to see the group grow and carry out such brilliant work that benefits the whole community," said Jan.
"Everyone has really worked hard and in a relatively short amount of time has made a big impact on their neighbourhood. It was great to see their efforts recognised with a nomination for Anglia In Bloom."
The group's next event will be on Saturday, October 22, at 10am when they will plant snowdrops on Tudor Green.
Anyone who wants to help out should turn up on the day. |
