Groundbreaking energy efficient extra care scheme
|
| Tuesday 2nd February 2010 |
Cambridge Housing Society (CHS), together with Hill Partnerships, the developers, invited City Councillors and representatives and members of the Chinese community to a groundbreaking ceremony at the start of the redevelopment of the former Simons House on Histon Road, Cambridge.
A new, exemplary extra care scheme is being built to provide 40 self-contained flats and communal facilities for older people. Eight of the flats will be reserved for elders from the Chinese community. The scheme is being built to Code for Sustainable Homes level 5, which will be carbon neutral and will include a biomass boiler, photovoltaic cells for energy production, grey water recycling, super insulated structure and smart metering.
Liz Bisset, Director of Community Services at City Council said 'The Council has been delighted to work in partnership with CHS to provide what will be wonderful facilities for both residents and other people in the area'.
After Councillors turned the first sod, Alan Wong, a priest from the Chinese Church, blessed the site and prayed for all those who would work on it, and for the eventual residents and users of the building.
The new building will be completed in March 2011. |
