Glasgow Housing Association has supported the creation of 390 new jobs and 400 new training places for people in the east end.
GHA chief executive Martin Armstrong today vowed to continue efforts to get more local people into work.
He was speaking at a jobs convention attended by MSPs Margaret Curran and Frank McAveety and other business leaders aimed at boosting employment opportunities and the local economy.
GHA has supported the creation of jobs and apprenticeships for local people in the east end through its investment contracts. The landlord was one of the first in the UK to insert a community benefit clause into all of its contracts which ensures that contractors provide targeted employment and training opportunities.
In the east end this has resulted in 118 new jobs in Glasgow Baillieston and 95 in Glasgow Shettleston over the past four years. Of those, 144 were new apprentices.
In addition, GHA also supports employability programmes to help the unemployed secure training places which can lead to work. In the east end, 400 training places were created with 177 landing employment at the end.
For example, in the east end, the Community Janitors employability programme has provided 161 training places for local people of whom 137 went into employment.
The East End Community Academy (218 training places), Youth Worker Development Programme (10) and East End Modern Apprenticeships (11) schemes have made a real difference to the lives of the local residents.
Martin Armstrong and the MSPs were joined today by Chris Brodie from Slims Consulting and Mark Feinmann of East Community Health and Care Partnership at John Wheatley College in Easterhouse.
The speakers were discussing key areas such as the current economic climate in the city and how it affects small businesses. They also discussed how public investment in housing and health is vital to job stability and economic prosperity.
Martin said: “Getting back into work is a key issue for many of our tenants. At GHA we work extremely hard to help our tenants improve their lives and to get back into employment.
“The schemes we have launched have made a real difference to the lives of people throughout the city and we aim to build on this success in the years to come.
“We are delighted to be driving forward new employment opportunities and to help improve communities.” |
