The second phase of a £78 million housing development in Sunderland has welcomed its first residents.
Beckwith Woods has officially opened in the Doxford Park area of the city following £5.8 million investment in the second phase of Gentoo’s major regeneration project.
Ian Porter, Managing Director of Gentoo Sunderland said: “It’s great to see the area taking shape as we build on what has already been achieved with phase 1 and gather momentum for the future of the development.
“This significant investment is in keeping with the needs of the local people as we aim to breathe life back into the area with our ambitious plans. After what has undoubtedly been a difficult time as we seek to transform the estate it’s fantastic to see the new residents here who are delighted with the end result.”
The first phase of the development is already complete, with 60 new homes made up of a variety of two, three and four bedroom houses, bungalows and apartments for both rent and sale. Phase 2 is due for completion in October this year, with work on phase 3 due to start in the same month.
Tracy Willis, 45, previously of Wansbeck Close, Doxford Park, is one of the new residents. She said: “I’m so excited to be moving into my fantastic new home, it’s like a new start for me – I can’t wait to get settled in. I’ve lived on Doxford Park for over 20 years but, having viewed the showhomes elsewhere in the city, I knew moving was the right choice for me.”
The official opening was marked as the keys were handed over to the four new residents, with the local community invited along too. Children from the area took part in a balloon races and were given goodie bags.
Councillor for the Doxford Park area, Betty Gibson, said: “This project has been in the planning stages for a while but now that things are happening for the area, everyone can see that it’s been worth waiting for. Doxford Park is a fantastic area, with good transport links and facilities as well as fantastic schools so this development builds on that and is positive and uplifting for the whole area.” |
