The first bricks were laid today in a prestigious new development of 31 apartments for older people by Bournemouth Housing Society Chairman, Mrs Pat Brown.
When complete in February 2011, the Society's new £3.9m extra care development in Derby Road, Bournemouth, will provide much needed accommodation for frail elderly people living in the Borough.
The scheme, called Craigleith, will provide 24 x 1-bedroom and 7 x 2-bedroom self contained flats.
Commenting on the new development, Pat Brown said; "Extra care housing offers more than traditional sheltered or residential homes by meeting the housing, care and support needs of older people, while helping them to maintain their independence in their own home.
We are excited that we have the opportunity to make such a scheme a reality in Bournemouth."
The development has been supported by a £2.15m grant through the Homes and Communities Agency, through the National Affordable Housing Programme.
Colin Molton, Homes and Communities Agency regional director for the South West, said: "Investing in housing that meets the needs of older and vulnerable people is a top priority for the HCA. That is why we are supporting this development, which will be great news for Bournemouth when complete.
"I will look forward to seeing people move into this much needed scheme."
Commenting on the new development, BHSE Chief Executive Steve Hayes said: "This is a significant new development for us and it clearly shows the benefit of a smaller specialist organisations working within a partnership such as New Futures."
Craigleith's communal facilities will include two lifts, residents' lounge, kitchen, laundry, two guest rooms, an assisted bathroom, two disabled persons' WCs, electric buggy store, cycle store, office and staff sleeping accommodation. There will be a door entry system, CCTV and emergency call system for the residents.
Work started on site on 14 December 2009 and is scheduled for completion in February 2011. |
