Few remaining affordable homes in Stoke
|
| Saturday 14th June 2008 |
The last three houses from a Beth Johnson Housing Association refurbishment project, funded by RENEW North Staffordshire and The Housing Corporation, are available on a shared-ownership basis.
Ten properties in Hanley South were completely refurbished inside and out, including new kitchens, bathrooms, windows, high efficiency boilers, new electrics with energy saving light bulbs, water saving measures and insulation; all of which will reduce the fuel consumption of the property and result in lower heating bills for the occupants. The houses, which were previously in poor condition, were refurbished to meet the Housing Corporation Scheme development standards to provide local people who had been affected by clearance in the area, with affordable homes.
Mark Birkin, Beth Johnson senior development officer said: "This programme was targeted at people who have been affected by the clearance process and might not have otherwise been able to stay in the area close to family and friends. It has been a real success. Residents will soon be moving in and are delighted that they have been able to stay local."
The three remaining properties are still available through Homebuy, a shared ownership scheme for those who wish to get their foot on the property ladder but who may only be able to obtain a small mortgage. Suitable candidates are able to purchase 50 percent of the Beth Johnson owned property initially, with the option to buy 100 per cent after one year. The average 50 per cent share is £35,000 with a low, monthly rent charged on the remainder .
Beth Johnson Housing Association has been involved in the process of helping re-house residents who have moved out of areas undergoing regeneration in Stoke-on-Trent, providing affordable housing options and offering advice on Homebuy schemes and rented properties in the area. |
