Energy-saving, affordable new homes for Warwickshire village
|
| Wednesday 5th October 2011 |
Villagers are celebrating the completion of a £1.5 million development of energy efficient, affordable homes for local people in Warwickshire.
New residents are settling in at the scheme in Fenny Compton, which includes 10 houses for rent and two bungalows for sale.
The houses are highly energy efficient, meeting level four of the Government's Code for Sustainable Homes and therefore exceeding the level three national requirement.
It is the first time Warwickshire Rural Housing Association (WRHA), which owns and manages the homes, has built to such a high environmental standard. The investment will mean a lower carbon footprint and aims to reduce fuel bills for tenants.
The properties feature a range of energy efficiency measures, including ground-source heat pumps which convert the earth's natural energy into heat.
WRHA Chairman Derrick Dyas said: "It is very exciting to see the completion of a development which will not only provide affordable homes for local people but also make a major contribution to making this village more sustainable."
Fenny Compton Parish Council and the community have supported the scheme, which has attracted £215,000 of funding from Stratford-on-Avon District Council and £770,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency, the national housing and regeneration agency for England.
The homes, in Station Road, are only available to people with a local connection to the village, for example through family or work ties.
The development aims to cater for local housing needs following a 2008 survey by Warwickshire Rural Community Council which revealed a demand for two-bedroom bungalows and two and three-bedroom houses in the village. |
