Duchess of Cornwall opens the Emmaus Oxford Community
|
| Thursday 11th June 2009 |
A centre in Oxford that gives former homeless people a place to call home has been officially opened by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
HRH Camilla, who is Royal Patron for homelessness charity Emmaus in the UK, paid a visit to the 24-bed Emmaus Oxford Community on the morning of June 10th and unveiled a special plaque.
Emmaus offers homeless men and women a home and work within a supportive environment. Residents work full-time for the community's business, a second-hand superstore in Northway Estate, Oxford, for which donated furniture and household goods are collected, refurbished and sold.
The official opening of the Emmaus Oxford Community, in Oxford Road, Cowley, is the result of many years of endeavour by a large number of people.
Funding for the project as a whole came from a wide range of sources including individuals, trusts, and the government. The cost and construction of the building was enabled by A2Dominion with funding from the Homes & Communities Agency.
Wyon Stansfeld, Director of Emmaus Oxford, said: "Having HRH's support means so much to all of us. Marking the opening in this way underlines what a significant achievement it is and allows us to say how grateful we are to the many people who have helped to make it happen."
Nicholas Yeeles, A2Dominion's Managing Director (North Region), said: "We are delighted to have launched this scheme in partnership with Emmaus Oxford. We are confident that it will make a real difference to the lives of homeless people in Oxford."
Working in partnership with Oxford City Council on the project, A2Dominion appointed contractors Bugler Developments Ltd to carry out the building work.
The keys for the £2.4 million centre were handed over from A2Dominion to Emmaus Oxford in March, about three months ahead of schedule, allowing the community's first residents to move in before the official opening. |
