Construction work to start on Sporting Village as new site arrangements come into force

Saturday 10th October 2009
Construction work on the £38m Basildon Sporting Village will start on Monday (12th October), meaning that new site arrangements at Gloucester Park North will come into force as the area for the new facility is hoarded off for health and safety reasons.

Basildon Council has produced a map detailing the new site arrangements that will be in force until April 2011, when the Sporting Village will open.

The current car park will close with a temporary car park being provided next to the new netball courts. Ample parking will still be available at Gloucester Park South.

Temporary changing and lighting will also be provided for current users of the facilities as the athletics track and field, synthetic turf pitch (astro), grass pitches and netball courts will remain open whilst work takes place.

Access to the athletics tracks, temporary changing, synthetic turf pitch, and netball courts will be via the temporary car park.

The footpath that currently runs from the Uppermayne underpass towards the athletics track, will stop with no access past the Murrayfield pavilion into the existing car park. The footpath that runs to the east side of the athletics track and towards the town centre will remain open.

Access to the temporary car park will be from the Cranes Farm Road entrance.

Cllr Kevin Blake, cabinet member for leisure and arts says: "I am delighted that work is about to start on this fantastic facility for the people of Basildon. This 18-month construction programme is being carefully managed by Community Solutions for Leisure to ensure the facility is delivered both on time and on budget.

This does mean that the entire site that will eventually house the Sporting Village will be fenced off as a building site until April 2011. This is inevitably going to cause inconvenience to some visitors to the park, for which we apologise. A new temporary car park is being provided but we would encourage as many people as possible to car share wherever possible over the next 18 months in order to reduce the number of cars using the temporary car park.

Although there will be some disruption, the only other alternative would have been to close the existing sports facilities during the construction and this would have caused our users far more inconvenience. We believe that at the end of this period everyone will agree it has been worth it as the best public sports facility in Essex is opened."

The project is being led by Basildon District Council and Basildon Renaissance Partnership, with funding support from Essex County Council, the HCA, Sport England and Veolia ES Cleanaway Pitsea Marshes Trust. The private sector partners are Community Solutions for Leisure, Morgan Ashurst, Morgan Sindell Investments and SLM Ltd.

An official launch event is taking place on Wednesday 14th October at 2.30pm. For more information contact Adam Keating on 01268 294842 and email adam.keating@basildon.gov.uk
