Conference highlights housing crisis in Dorset

Friday 8th February 2008
The Synergy Housing Group, one of the largest providers of affordable homes in the Wessex region, has been complimented by the National Housing Federation (NHF) for successfully building sustainable homes across Dorset.

At a conference jointly sponsored by the Synergy Housing Group and the NHF, to highlight the affordable housing crisis, NHF Chief Executive David Orr praised Synergy's efforts in this important area.

David Orr said: "The NHF supports the work of housing associations providers such the Synergy Housing Group and we are campaigning for better housing and neighbourhoods across the country.

David Orr also highlighted the housing crisis in the area and said: "Average house prices in Dorset are £241,419, which is thirteen times the average income. For many people living in Dorset the option of buying a house is out of reach. Dorset has the highest number of second homes in the country and it is predicted that the average house price will have risen to £316,000 by 2012.

"We have reached a point where the government has confirmed we need an increased supply.

"The Synergy Housing Group are more than capable of providing more affordable homes and have already made a great start. Synergy are currently building sustainable homes and using best practice in their design. The Group as a whole has a great opportunity and the capacity to provide new homes for local people and you have the NHFs backing. However, I recognise this has to be backed up by the availability of land and an efficient planning system."

The conference attracted delegates from major house builders, housing associations and local authorities across Dorset and highlighted the benefits of working together to increase the supply of affordable housing.

The Chair of Synergy Housing Group, Ernie Battey said: "We need to work with local authorities to deliver new homes and enlist the support of local politicians to achieve this. Without doubt we need more homes, however, there is an inbuilt prejudice with local residents, not wanting new developments close to them. The NHF are assisting us to move in the right direction and we in turn will play our part by rising to the challenge that presents itself."

Synergy Housing Group, Chief Executive, Graeme Stanley said: "This has proved a very worthwhile conference which has highlighted the acute housing shortage not only in Dorset, but across the South West. We are grateful to David for taking time out to join us today. Through the endeavours of the National Housing Federation, housing associations across Dorset have achieved the largest allocation of funding for new homes than has been the case for a number of years. With this level of financial support, the Synergy Housing Group has ambitious plans to meet the housing needs of local people."
