Community grant helps oil buying scheme
|
| Thursday 2nd February 2012 |
A scheme to help people in rural areas save money on heating oil is being supported by the Better Homes, Better Lives fund.
The initiative, which means heating oil customers band together to buy in bulk, ensuring the best price for their fuel, is being set up by Durham Rural Community Council (DRCC).
With the support of a £500 grant from the fund, DRCC will be able to buy a franchise to operate a scheme which started in Oxfordshire and relies on volunteers to recruit new members and co-ordinate orders. The original scheme saves members between £50 and £80 on each delivery, depending on how much oil they buy.
Liz Charles, scheme promoter at DRCC, said: "This model is taking off like wildfire around the country because it is harnessing the purchasing power of the many rural communities who are without mains gas.
"By becoming a franchisee for this scheme we are using the expertise of an experienced national community oil purchaser who will be able to secure excellent price deals for our members."
Peter Chaffer, chief executive of Dale & Valley Homes, added: "People power is important in rural communities and we are delighted to support a project which will bring real benefits to the more remote parts of Weardale.
The Better Homes, Better Lives fund is run by Dale & Valley Homes with its partners Gentoo and Esh Property Services. It gives grants of up to £500 to community groups and projects within Wear Valley. To find out more contact Frances Griss on 0800 0830 333. |
