Celebrations as Dibdin View opens
|
| Tuesday 16th August 2011 |
There were celebrations as Magna officially opened a long-awaited affordable housing scheme in Bridport on Friday.
Dibdin View comprises 37 homes for rent, 17 shared ownership properties and three self-build houses.
Its completion was marked with a community barbecue for residents and other guests, including West Dorset District Council leader Cllr Robert Gould and Jane Dibdin, the widow of Humphrey Dibdin, a local councillor after whom the estate is named.
Magna Housing Association chairman Ian Bullock paid tribute to all those involved in the scheme, which was overseen by a stakeholders' panel made up Allington Parish Council, the Bridport Local Area Partnership, Bridport Town Council and West Dorset District Council.
Mrs Dibdin took along 12 members of her family to the event, which included a bouncy castle and entertainment from her son, Daniel, a professional musician, and guitarist and vocalist Sean Geraghty.
"Humphrey would have been quite overwhelmed by this, but very pleased," she said. "He was very passionate about affordable housing for local people."
She thanked Magna and everyone else who had helped bring the scheme to fruition, especially Allington Parish Council chairman Phil Lathey, who has campaigned for many years for affordable housing on the site.
More than 1,000 people 'bid' for the rented properties, indicating just how needed the homes are. All were let to people with a housing need and a strong connection to Bridport or Allington.
Magna bought the land from the district council for £1. The national Homes and Communities Agency invested £3.5 million in the £7.7 million scheme, with the rest of the money coming from Magna.
Bristol-based ISG Pearce Ltd built the homes, which were designed by Morgan Carey Architects Ltd, from Wareham.
The houses have photovoltaic panels installed on roofs to generate electricity during the day, with 21 of them having rainwater harvesting.
