Award Winning Ashton Development

Friday 21st August 2009
The Regenda Group's regeneration housing development on Stockport Road, Ashton Under Lyne, beats off stiff competition to win a "Silver international Green Apple Award for Built Environment and Architectural Heritage", at a ceremony held at Hampton Court Palace, London.

The Regenda Group, a leading independent North West housing and regeneration organisation, were presented the opportunity to develop this derelict brownfield site by Tameside MBC for a new build housing project for local families.

The site had been derelict for a number of years and has been transformed to provide 5 three bedroom terraced houses which were designed to incorporate many eco-friendly technologies with the development achieving 'Very Good EcoHomes' accreditation and Secured by Design accreditation.

The area is undergoing a regeneration programme, of which this scheme is part of the fourth phase. These stunning new homes were designed to be both affordable and sustainable in the heart of Ashton. The properties have a host of water and energy savings features, including a radical design in the roof cowls which reflect traditional chimney stacks as well as providing daylight via sun-tunnels into the internal hallway below. Externally, the development also benefits from a new car parking area including visitor parking to ease congestion in the cul-de-sac at the rear of the site plus a 'green wall' of native ivy and new trees have been included to attract birds and insects.

Martin Davies, Director of Development at The Regenda Group said. "We are delighted that this innovative scheme in Ashton Under Lyne won the Silver International Green Apple Award for Built Environment and Architectural Heritage. It is an achievement to be recognised for the use of environmentally friendly design elements. Modern methods of construction were used in the development of the site, and the homes benefit from a range of energy and water saving measures.

The development has set a standard for regeneration in the area and we hope it will become a benchmark for future developments in Ashton Under Lyne."

Jim Davies, Housing Renewal Manager at Tameside MBC said "I am pleased that the Regenda Group has won this award. The Council and Regenda have worked successfully in partnership for a number of years on a major regeneration scheme in the West End area of Ashton under Lyne, and this award recognises their commitment to the environment and to their tenants.

Tameside Council is keen to work with organisations, like The Regenda Group, who show a willingness to move with the times, dare to be innovative and who invest in the community."

Frank Olchoski, Director at Denovo Design Architects, who received the award on behalf of The Regenda Group said, "We are thrilled to have won this award, which celebrates our commitment to environmentally conscious design.

However, each development is viewed by the Practice as being very much a joint venture between all parties concerned, and the award also recognises the commitment of the Client - The Regenda Group , the Contractor - Lovell, and also all the Sub-Contractors, who supported us in ensuring that the original concepts were realised."

National Organiser Roger Wolens commented; "We have had around 200 nominations this year, so the development did particularly well to be finalists against some very strong competition."

The Green Apple Awards are now in their sixteenth year and attracted more than 200 nominations this year, and represent a feeder scheme into the National Treasures Guide.
