American students to visit Norwich Housing with Care scheme
|
| Thursday 8th October 2009 |
Tenants and staff at Dell Rose Court Housing with Care scheme in Norwich will be welcoming students from America this week. The students are in the UK to study the British welfare system as part of their university studies.
Sociology students from Oberlin College in Ohio and Grinnell College in Iowa will also be visiting the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Notre Dame High School whilst in Norwich.
The students will visit Dell Rose Court from 11:30am to 1pm on Friday (9 October) and will find out how Housing with Care works as well as being offered tours of the building.
Kent McClelland, Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, said: "Students who come to study in London can benefit from getting out of the capital to see what life is like in other parts of the country. My students are studying policies made in Westminster and Whitehall, but seeing how these can affect the lives of people in Norwich will bring the policies to life.
"We are grateful to the residents of Dell Rose Court for welcoming us and to Norfolk County Council for making this visit possible."
Dell Rose Court, which opened in 2006, is Norfolk's thirteenth Housing with Care Scheme. The schemes help older people live as independently as possible within a safe and supportive environment.
The scheme has a total of 48 flats, 46 for single and two for dual occupancy, accommodating a total of 50 tenants. Residents have their own on-site shop, café complete with jukebox, restaurant, Internet room, hairdressing salon and cinema room.
People with dementia are also catered for, with a separate unit of 12 'extra-care' flats offering safe and comfortable accommodation. This unit also has its own restaurant and activities room, assisted en-suite bathrooms and a secure garden.
David Harwood, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services at Norfolk County Council, said: "We hope this visit will be beneficial for our American colleagues and illustrate to them what a great service this is for older people living in Norfolk. Housing with Care schemes give older people the independence of their own home in a safe environment and offers the assurance that their care needs are supported day and night.
"Our existing House with Care schemes are doing a marvellous job for our current older generation but the number of people aged 85 and over in Norfolk is projected to increase by 54% by 2020. Therefore, Norfolk County Council has created a long-term strategy to provide enough housing with care places for the future whilst providing value for money and an efficient and improving service for council taxpayers."
Members of the media are welcome to attend during the visit. Dell Rose Court is located in Northfields, Norwich, NR4 7EL. |
