| Monday 24th January 2011 |
It's all systems go for the development in the St Mary's area of Oldham with news that the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) is investing £7.84m in the scheme. Contour Housing Group has now appointed Bramall Construction to start on site.
The HCA investment will provide 93 family-sized, mixed tenure homes along with a neighbourhood park and green walkway.
Deborah McLaughlin, executive director North West at the HCA, said: "I am pleased that the St Mary's scheme can now be started with our support. We have worked closely with Contour Housing Group, Oldham Council and the local community for over a decade to help bring this high profile scheme forward, so it is great to see that these high quality new affordable homes can now be built for local people."
Vicky Carroll Group Assistant Director for housing and regeneration expert Contour Housing Group said: "The site was previously poor quality deck access flats and has been standing derelict for some time. Now the area will be revitalised with the development of new homes, landscaping, infrastructure and a public open space.
"As well as the physical development of the site, we will be looking to work with public and private partners to encourage a range of community initiatives that will benefit the wider neighbourhood. It is hoped that these measures, together with an influx of new residents in the future, will have a positive impact on the community."
There will be 52 new homes for general rent and 41 designated 'rent to sale' through New Build HomeBuy.
The partners will also be implementing plans for training and employment opportunities for local people.
Bounded by St. Marys Way, Egerton Street and Horsedge Street close to Oldham town centre, the 2.2 hectare gateway site is a key regeneration area for Oldham Council.
Councillor John McCann, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Housing said: "As well as providing much needed high quality family housing, it will ensure this gateway to Oldham is transformed by a development that we can all be proud of."
Remediation work has now started on site and it is envisaged that the first homes will be ready for completion in 2012. Other contractors include architects Nichol Thomas, structural engineers Capita, Project Managers Arcus and Costing and Planning Supervisors are the Simon Fenton Partnership. |
