Adur Council set zero council tax increase

Wednesday 23rd February 2011
Zero council increase this year say Adur Council. To balance the books and protect frontline services for the next financial year savings of £627,000 have been found.

So far compulsory redundancy has been avoided at Adur and Worthing councils. Although, there has been a reduction in staff numbers because of a vacancy freeze and staff taking voluntary redundancy. This has led to 65 Adur and Worthing posts going during the last 18 months with another 30 posts under review.

In his budget speech to Adur Council, leader Neil Parkin said: "I would like to thank Unison for working with managers to help save their members jobs. Together more will be saved."

At a full council meeting on 17/02/2011 councillors agreed to keep council tax at the 2010/11 level, slightly less. The Adur council tax for band D households in Shoreham, Southwick and Coombes is £279.54, this includes special expenses. For Lancing, with the parish precept of £32.40 it's £294.57 and for Sompting with special expenses and precept it's £303.39 for 2011/12.

At the meeting Neil highlighted the work of the partnership with neighbouring Worthing Borough Council. He said: "With Worthing we have changed the shape of local government in England. Hardly a week goes by without us being asked for advice on how to do it." He also said: "Even Eric Pickles thinks we are great."
