Vectis was formed, as a non-charitable Housing Association, in 1974, by the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, to provide affordable rented housing for local key workers. The cost of the homes would be paid for via a grant and loan system operated by the Housing Corporation. The original shareholders of Vectis were representatives of local businesses, and the first Chairmanwas Mr. Howard Evans, then President of the Chamber. The association was run by a Managing Agent, Mr. Fred Taylor, who was a senior partner in a firm of Chartered Accountants in Newport.
The first new homes were built in 1980, and by 1990 there were approximately 90 around the island. Half of these were to be rented by key workers, the other half were for Isle of Wight Council nominations. In the event there were very few of the former type, so most were nominations.
Today, Vectis has a good working personal relationship with the overwhelming majority of its tenants. This is considered fundamental to a successful future. It has embraced the principles of ‘continuous improvement’, and can demonstrate practical examples. It has also achieved, and been re-accredited with, Investor in People status and, in respect of development activity, Construction Client Charter (mini) status. A very high percentage of its properties have been, and continue to be, modernised, and comply with Decent Home Standards. |
