 General Information / Background
Sanctuary's aims are to provide good quality homes that people choose to live in, shape flexible, customer focused and cost-effective services, and to develop a culture which encourages and motivates staff.

Sanctuary's vision is to be a market leader in terms of quality, innovation and performance. Sanctuary combines the benefits of a large organisation, in particular financial strength and stability, well developed staff training and research and policy developments, with responsive local management through its network of area offices, of which there are over 20 throughout the country and in excess of 1,200 employees.

The business was established in 1969 and has grown over the years through a combination of strategic mergers, and through a substantial, national development programme during the 1990s.

The Association is an Industrial and Provident Society, an exempt charity under the Charities Act 1993 and regulated by the Housing Corporation. It's governance arrangement consists of a Central Council made up of both elected members and specific appointees (including tenant representatives). The Central Council appoints a number of Executive Directors to manage the operations of the group.

Through its trading division Sanctuary Care, the organisation also operates and runs six nursing homes and domiciliary care businesses in the South and South West of England. Its Scottish housing business is operated through Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sanctuary Housing Association.
