Salisbury City Almshouse and Welfare Charities have a long history, reaching back to the 14th Century, of caring for elderly people within the Salisbury area.
The Charities manage 11 almshouse sites in and around the city where residents can continue to lead independent lives. Modernised almshouses offer warm and comfortable self contained dwellings of character, some with newly installed level access shower rooms. There are also common rooms available for communal functions where residents may, if they wish, join with others for coffee mornings or other activities of choice. A warden is also available to visit each almshouse to ensure residents' general well-being and that care provision is being delivered to meet individual support needs.
The two Very Sheltered almshouse sites provide 24 hour wardening and a nourishing midday meal prepared and cooked on the premises.
Whilst the Charities are predominantly involved in housing support for elderly people, the foundation of the Buchanan Housing Charity allows for the Charities to offer 12 flats and 11 houses to accommodate young families within the city.
Additionally, the Charities extend benefaction through awards of welfare grants to help people in need and for whom there is no equivalent support from the State. Help in educational and training needs of young people is a small but important aspect of the Charities' role in the sphere of care within the local community.
