Description
Pickering and Ferens Homes was conceived at the start of the last century by two individual men, namely Christopher Pickering and Thomas Ferens. In 1910 Christopher Pickering - a successful trawler owner - donated £6,300 for the construction of twelve almshouses (Pickering Crescent) to be built in West Hull. He also donated further land and money for the construction of Pickering Park along Hessle Road where the almshouses are situated.

These buildings housed ex-fishermen and were managed and maintained by the Kingston upon Hull city council in accordance with the Trust Deeds. In 1919 and 1955 a further twelve almshouses were built to house more ex-fishermen. By 1978 the city council had obtained Housing Association status in connection with the almshouses and in 1991 "Pickering Homes" was registered as an almshouse charity with the Housing Corporation.

Whilst Pickering Homes developed on the west side of Hull the Ferens Haven of Rest was developing on the east side of Hull. Thomas Ferens was responsible for the conception of the charity when he built twelve almshouses at East Park in 1912. They were donated to the Hull City Council to be administered as a Trust under the Ferens Haven of Rest (now known as Ferens Haven). This Trust developed further properties at Staveley Road, Babington Row, Barham Road and Holderness Road.

In recent years Pickering and Ferens Homes has concentrated on developing new properties in Hull and now owns 1148 properties. In addition the Association provides management and maintenance agency service to 31 one bedroom flats located in Hull and Bridlington, in the ownership of the Mrs Richardson's charity.
