Oxford Citizens started life as the Oxford Cottage Improvement Company in 1866 and bought its first properties a year later in Red Lion Square, Oxford. By 1932 we had 130 dwellings – mainly in St Ebbes and St Clements - but most of these were demolished or transferred to the Council over the next 20 years, following the 1930 Housing Act.
Our first sheltered scheme opened in Bath Street in 1937 and in 1945 we appointed our first salaried housing manager – until then we had relied on volunteers. Charity Act registration followed in 1962 and three years later, with 94 homes in management, we changed our name to Oxford Citizens Housing Association.
A merger with Oxfordshire Housing Society in 1973 extended our work outside the City of Oxford and by 1986 we managed 290 properties. Other landmarks included our first special needs schemes in 1992, followed a year later by our first shared ownership properties.
Today thousands of people across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire benefit from our high quality homes and services. We have never forgotten our original aim – “to provide healthy and comfortable dwellings” for local people. |
