 General Information / Background
New Charter formed in 1999 as the new landlords to own and manage properties transferred from Tameside Council. Until September 2000, it was Britain's biggest Large Scale Voluntary Transfer (LSVT).

The North subsidiary owns homes in Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden, Mossley and Stalybridge.

In November 2005, the Group expanded by incorporating Aksa Housing Association, based in Oldham. Aksa is a BME association with homes in Bury and Manchester as well as Oldham and Tameside. With a turnover of £53 million a year and a workforce of almost 800, New Charter is one of the North West's largest Registered Social Landlords, and is regulated by The Housing Corporation, a Government watchdog.

New Charter inherited homes needing over £220 million of repairs and maintenance, and a 10-year improvement programme started immediately. New bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and central heating have been installed in thousands of homes for rent. All tenants have benefited from this investment. Funding is from the Nationwide, the largest Building Society in the world.

Tenant involvement is critical to New Charter, and tenants have a greater say on all matters that affect their homes.

New Charter has seen its tenant satisfaction soar to 93% (February 2007), placing it at the top of the English league table of large landlords. It is also the first RSL to sponsor an Academy, a new school in North Ashton.

We aim to create Great Homes, Great Neighbourhoods, Great People.
