Magna Housing Association was formed in 1989 as West Dorset Housing Association. In 1993 West Dorset District Council transferred its stock of 5,400 properties to us under a Large Scale Voluntary Transfer (LSVT) and our name was changed to Magna Housing Association in 1994. At the same time we changed the composition of our Board of Management to include representatives from the district council and tenants of West Dorset.
In 1998 Magna became the first housing association in the UK to have successfully completed two LSVTs with the transfer of 1,850 properties from West Somerset District Council to our partner organisation, Magna West Somerset Housing Association. MWS was established as a subsidiary of Magna Housing Group with a Board drawn from members living in the West Somerset area.
As a result of the West Somerset transfer we have developed a group structure, comprising Magna Housing Group and two subsidiary organisations, Magna Housing Association and Magna West Somerset Housing Association. Our parent body, Magna Housing Group, provides services to the two partners and monitors their performance.
