Leicester YMCA was one of the first associations to establish itself after the founding association in London, in around 1857. However, this particular association was formed around 1870/1871, reorganised in 1883 and moved into the current premises at 7 East Street in 1900/1901. The Marquiss of Northampton opened the association hall (now the Y Theatre), which was completed first on December 5th 1900.
Leicester YMCA became a housing association in 1980. In the same year the hostel was fully refurbished and opened by HRH Prince of Wales on the 10th February 1981. Further refurbishment to the building was carried out between 1998 – 2000. |
