Howard Cottage Society was founded in 1911, by Ebenezer Howard, the pioneer of the'Garden City' movement, and currently operates within a 25 mile radius of Letchworth - the First Garden City.
We are a charitable Housing Association and our aim is: "To provide good quality, affordable homes for people in housing need." Our efforts are concentrated on housing those who are inadequately housed and unable financially to solve their own housing problems. We also try to ensure that the use of our stock is maximised.
We manage over 1300 properties, the majority of which are in Letchworth. We also have over 100 housing units in rural areas of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, which are let through local authority nominations. Our stock also includes 171 units of Sheltered Accommodation split between our 5 Warden Controlled Schemes in Letchworth.
We are a non-profit making organisation, which means our rental income is used for the maintenance of our property stock, major repairs programmes, tenant services, and management fees. The Housing Association employs over 40 professional staff who, appointed for this purpose by the Chief Executive, carry out the day-to-day work. They provide the best possible service to our tenants and to maintain the smooth running of the company.
We are controlled by a voluntary Board of Management, consisting mainly of local people and residents of the Society. The Board ensures that the Society follows procedures and guidelines set out by The Housing Corporation, and control any major decisions on policy changes and development. |
