Durham Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association was founded in 1898 to provide homes for retired miners and their wives. From its beginning, during a time of rapid social transformation, the association's work has contributed to the well being of individuals, their families and communities. Throughout its history, the association has sustained its core values of mutual support and care and the spirit of neighbourhood - the defining characteristics of mining community.
With a long-standing presence in 70 villages in the area, Durham Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association, like the mining industry itself, has become a fundamental part of the heritage and fabric of North East England. For over a century the association had invested a substantial amount of effort and investment in the area with a significant number of people who depended upon the successful continuance and enrichment of the association's work.
Now Durham Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association is a registered housing association, and Britain's largest almshouse charity providing 1,500 homes in 115 locations for older, less physically active or disabled people, although we still give preference to ex miners. |
