Devon Community Housing Society Limited was formed by a group of professional people, inspired by its first Secretary, the late John Radford ARIBA, in November 1965.
Initially, the Society was formed to promote co-ownership schemes and in the late 1960s and early 1970s schemes were developed in Sidmouth, Marldon, Teignmouth, Willand Old Village and Crediton.
Because of increased costs of building and land values the promotion of co-ownership projects became no longer possible and in 1974 a site in Seaton was acquired by the Society and developed to provide its first fair-rent scheme. Further schemes were developed and in 1977, the Society completed its first sheltered project for older people in Exeter.
In the early 1980s, it was decided to pursue a a policy of providing accommodation for older and disabled people and during the next few years, further sheltered schemes for older people were developed, together with a residential care home for people with learning disabilities and a hostel for young physically disabled people. |
